Each day, children at Nythe receive two 30-minute maths sessions:
Our Maths lessons follow the National Curriculum. Teachers break down the National Curriculum statements into small, manageable objectives. Each Maths lesson focuses on just one of these objectives. Children complete a ‘Do It, Twist It, Solve It’ sheet in each Maths lesson. The ‘Do It’ activity allows them to rehearse the skill that they have just learnt and develop fluency. The ‘Twist It’ activity allows them to explore the knowledge/skill that they have learnt from a new perspective and challenges them to explain their reasoning. The ‘Solve It’ activity provides a challenging, open-ended problem to solve by applying their new knowledge and skills.
Our Maths meetings allow children to revisit skills and knowledge that they have learnt previously. They provide an opportunity to address misconceptions, embed fluency, or to extend understanding and develop mastery. Maths meetings also allow for key knowledge such as number bonds or multiplication facts to be embedded.
